Weetabix, that Tweet, and why it worked so well

Just as we thought things couldn’t get any weirder, Weetabix’s marketing team upped their game.

It was a quiet Tuesday evening in February 2021 when we discovered some activity building momentum on Twitter. Weetabix had seemingly lost the plot.

Weetabix usually gets good engagement on their ‘normal’ posts, but this latest controversy caused those results to skyrocket.

Why?

Because it was ridiculous.

They knew it would provoke a reaction but in a jokey, jovial way. What ensued was a viral pile-on where verified Twitter accounts worldwide (yes, even the US Embassy got involved) engaged with the Tweet in their own unique way.

What can we learn from this?

I hate the saying, but thinking outside the box can often generate some exciting results. If what you’re doing isn’t gaining you the desired results, step outside of your comfort zone and do something a little bit silly (if your brand allows). You might be surprised by the results.

(Plus, if you can engage in some friendly banter with other accounts, you’ll boost things even more!)
