Over the last few days, you may have received an email from Facebook describing its new privacy policy. It comes into force on January 1st 2015, and here’s what you can expect.
What is it?
The new Privacy Basics tool gives users a detailed, but digestible guide through polices and terms, and also provides tips that could relate to your usage. This allows you to be more in control of your privacy settings and lets you clearly manage who sees your updates.
Why has Facebook done this?
Since Facebook went global, there’s been a long-lasting issue that it hasn’t been clear to users who can view aspects of their profiles, such as photos, updates and links.
Not only this, but multiple complaints have been made to Facebook regarding promotional pages. Now, Facebook has identified a few attributes that made pages and posts appear too promotional and given users the opportunity to be more in control over ads.
For example, before, if you decided to opt out of particular adverts while using your desktop computer, it was highly likely that the ad would still show up on your tablet, or smartphone. The new tool allows users to save their settings across all devices.
What we can expect to see
Once the tool is launched, users will be able to view and amend who sees their updates easily and quickly. Users will also be able access information through Privacy Basics, as the data policy is shorter, clearer and a load easier to read! You can find out more information on the official Facebook Privacy Basics page.
One last thing, if you have a business Facebook page to promote your business, make sure you take note of what you can and can’t post, and what’s likely to make users remove your posts from their timeline completely! After all, social media is about sharing, building connections and giving your brand a face, not just about advertising.
